Fat Log

Well so far I've lost 6.5 pounds since we started South Beach just over a month ago. I actually lost 7, but then gained back half a pound at all the parties and luncheons I've been to over thepast two weeks. I'm actually happy that they're over and I can eat the diet food again - I think the biggest and best side effect of the whole diet is the impact it had on my digestive system. Less gassy, less indigestion, and stopped needing Tums and Rolaids all the time. Nice!

I've lost 5.5 pounds in one week on the South Beach Diet, but I don't enjoy eating anymore and today I felt ill. Don't know if I'm sick, or it's the weather, or it's the diet. I want to exercise which would probably make me feel better, but I don't have the energy to do more than walk. Read my diet log here.

I was doing really well when I first cut out regular sodas and then caffeine and dropped two pounds right away. Then I bought a case of Mug root beer, and every once in a while I'd have one. Sometimes a root beer float. Within another two weeks the weight came back. I'm fairly stabilized now, but it's not at the weight I want to be at. About 10 pounds less would be great, because I'd have more clothes to wear and a lot of them would look better.

So after going to lunch with my IT department and listening to them talk about the South Beach Diet, I thought I'd give it a shot. It's hard for me to admit I have to follow a plan, since I know how to get in shape - I dropped 5 inches in a month 4 years ago and eventually ended up weighing less than I did in college, without dieting at all (just 2 hours of weightlifting and cardio 6 days a week). I also have a degree in kinesiology and have taken nutrition and health classes, but it boils down to the problem that I eat pretty much whatever I want. None of the education and knowledge matters if I eat whatever I want, whenever I want. So maybe having actual goals to follow will help, because I won't be able to reason with myself by thinking things like "well, I'll just have two cookies, and eat a little less at work." That never works for me because I end up eating the cookies and too much dinner. I don't really have a sweet tooth, although do I like to follow a meal with a little something sweet (drinking a soda counts). When I do crave food, it's usually salty stuff like chips or fries. I have a theory that it's related to my low blood pressure, but I'll save that for my doctoral thesis. I'm also not very good at moderating what I eat. I've never eaten until I've literally been sick, but if there is something laying around that I like, I'll usually eat too much of it (a good recent example: Halloween candy).

The first two weeks of South Beach require skipping all breads, pasta, and fruit. I'm keeping a separate log of those two weeks here. There is a list of what I ate each day, a long description of how I felt, and a summary. I'm also including my husband's reactions because he's trying it with me.
